Strike A Pose

by Kaleigh Glaza on April 20, 2010

It was just over a month ago that I ranked Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” music video, featuring Beyonce and an array of scantily clad female convict backup dancers, as the oddest music video I had ever seen.  And while this is still true, my allegiance to Lady Gaga has been thoroughly tested — all thanks to Sue Sylvester.

If you live in a cave or just got out of prison, you might not know of Sue Sylvester.  Sue Sylvester is one of the main characters from the runaway musical FOX hit, “Glee.”  And again, for those of you who have been living in a box, “Glee” is the comedy/music video/teen rom-com/music phenomenon that follows the antics of the members of a small-town high school glee club as they tackle young love, classmate jealousy, teenage rebellion and the quest for the state show choir title.

It’s like every John Hughes movie ever made smashed together and set to music.  It has given the world covers of every song from “Confessions Part II” to “Highway to Hell,” from “Single Ladies” to “Jump.”  And this week, it will take on its biggest challenge yet: Madonna.

Who better than the infamous Sue Sylvester to usher in that era?

At the end of last week’s much-anticipated new episode, FOX showed a music video of the Madonna classic “Vogue,” as interpreted by Sue Sylvester (see below).  Jane Lynch, the actress who portrays Sylvester, “strikes a pose” in the video that would make even Madonna jealous.  Lynch rocks a coned-bustier just as well as Madonna did in 1990, and she’s ten years older than Madonna was when the video was released.

Lynch is best known for her comedic roles in movies like “The 40 Year Old Virgin,” but if those don’t keep panning out, I think she could give any pop star a run for their money simply based on shock value.  Lady Gaga is great, but she’s been doing the crazy thing for so long that no one is phased anymore when she wears Kermit the Frog dresses or spurts blood onstage.

But when Sue Sylvester throws on an all lace shirt with suspenders instead of her normal combination of sweats and a bullhorn as the uber-intense cheerleading coach on “Glee,” the room goes quiet.  Literally.  I watched the return of “Glee” with a group of friends, and the only time the room was quieter was during a particularly entertaining tampon ad. No, I’m not kidding.  The only thing that could stop our constant chatter and play-by-play of Puck’s whereabouts onscreen were tampons and Sue Sylvester.

I think this puts D up right next to Lady Gaga.  Maybe not ahead of her, because lets face it, nothing is weirder than having your little sister make an appearance in your music video as a convict.  That’s shock value that doubles as some supreme entertainment too.  So take that disco stick and shove it.

No one can take Lady Gaga out of the top spot (at least, not yet), but Sue and her “Vogue” music video give Gaga a run for her money.

Strike that pose, Sue!  I can’t wait to watch.
